ECFR 219 PSLF Program 

Qualifying Loan Types 

  • Direct Subsidized Loan 
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loan 
  • Direct PLUS loan 
  • Direct Consolidation loan 

Qualifying Origination Dates 

  • All Origination Dates qualify 

Requirements 

  • Not in default on the loan for which forgiveness is requested  
  • Complete 120 separate monthly qualifying payments after October 1, 2007 
  • Employed full-time by a public service organization or serving in a full-time AmeriCorps or Peace Corps position 

Borrower eligibility 

  • Work an annual average of at least 30 hours per week for an eligible employer -at least 8 months per year 
  • Monthly payments must be made in full within 15 days of due date on monthly bill to be considered qualifying towards the required 120 program payments 
  • The required 120 monthly payments must be paid under one or more of the following repayment plans: 
  • An income-based repayment plan, (IBR) (Except for a parent PLUS borrower) 
  • An income-contingent repayment plan (ICR) (Except for a parent PLUS borrower) 
  • A Standard repayment plan; or  
  • Except for the alternative repayment plan, any plan the monthly payment amount is not less than what would be under the Direct Loan Standard repayment plan 

Eligible Employment 

  • Government employee 
  • Law enforcement 
  • Military service 
  • Peace Corps position 
  • A business not organized for profit (a labor union, partisan political organization, etc) 
  • Public service organization 
  • A Federal, State, local, or Tribal government organization, agency, or entity; 
  • A public child or family service agency 
  • A non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code that is exempt from taxation under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code;  
  • A Tribal college or university; or 
  • A private organization that provides public services (Head Start, Pre-K, elderly care, etc.) 

Limited Waiver PSLF/TEPSLF Program 

Prior payments may be counted as qualifying payments, regardless of loan type, repayment plan, or whether the payment was made in full or on-time.  

All you need is qualifying payment amount and qualifying employment.  

Applies to borrowers with  

  • Direct Loans  
  • those who have already consolidated into the Direct Loan Program, and  
  • those who consolidate into the Direct Loan Program by Oct. 31, 2022.  

* Parent PLUS loans are not eligible under the limited PSLF waiver.
